No traces of the harmful volatile chemicals were found in the water and now the Union Carbide Corporation, the company responsible for managing the water quality insists that the these filters should be removed. But people from the Committee of Childhood Cancer are convinced that the filters should stay, because over 600 chemicals were dumped on this site in 1971, but the government tests the water for only 87 of them. If the filters are removed the cancer might come back.

Uganda Benefits from Water Filters

The Gentle Dentistry Organization will donate around 500 brand new toothbrushes and 300 water filter kits to Palmer and Sharon Pisle. They will perform their fourth for this year humanitarian mission to Uganda. Their aim is to teach the people there what is proper hygiene. For starters, most Ugandans have never seen a toothbrush in their life and have no idea what it is used for. They will have to teach all these people how to use the device properly and why they need to use it. Dying because of a tooth might be prevented, or at least they will have proper hygiene. But the tooth hygiene is not the biggest problem there. The biggest problem is the safety of the drinking water. Like most African countries, Uganda is not an exception from the rule that people simply die of water borne diseases. Exactly 375 people a day is the correct number – this much people pass away every single day, because they drink from polluted wells. Most of them have no idea that in order for the water to be drinkable it should be filtered first. The mission will strive to educate as many people as possible on how to use the filtration kits and will make sure that the people use it properly and are not selling the filtered water afterwards.

Last year there was a special project for Rwanda called Potters without Borders and its main purpose was to introduce ceramic water filters to the people of Rwanda. This is a country, where 80% of disease is water borne. This is an overwhelming number. Many of the children who fall sick die, which is truly a tragedy. But no wonder this is happening, as most of the Rwandans get their water form swamps, rivers and lakes where the water has never been treated and is full of bacteria and other harmful particles. Most of the population in Rwanda is very poor and they do not have the opportunity to get safe, drinking water for themselves and their children. A local organization has partnered with Potters without Borders, a Canadian organization and also the local potters in the hope of making filters something that everyone has in their home in Rwanda. The filters are made of very low cost materials that are available locally and everyone can afford them. The technology is very simple, but yet it turns out it is 99.8% effective. This is such wonderful news for Rwandans! People who are in very bad economical position and live in poverty also benefit from that project, because they take part in the production of the filters and thus help their families financially.

We have to be extremely thankful that we live in a society where safe drinking water is a given. Help out people in need – give them water filters.
