Getting a whole house water filter

March 18th, 2010 1 comment

It’s common knowledge that tap water is not completely safe to drink and filtered water is much better for us as it rids our tap water of all those nasty chemicals and contaminants that we don’t need. Sure our tap water is purified to some extent but usually not enough to remove bacteria, metals and traces of pesticides and herbicides, which are often found in ordinary household tap water.

Due to this, lots of people will start installing house water filters to filter all the water that comes out of any tap in the house to ensure the water that you and your family drinks is healthy and clean.

The most popular water filters are carbon water filters also called charcoal filters, made from coconut husk. These filters remove most of the dangerous water impurities, but allows minerals that are beneficial to our health to pass. These filters are not expensive and a single cartridge should last between six and nine months.

There are some downsides to carbon water purifiers though. If you know the water in your area is acidic you may need to use a different filter as these ones can’t change the pH level of your water. Also if the filter is unused for several days it may start to get a bit mouldy especially in the warmer months.

Reverse Osmosis water filters work well as whole house filters, this is because they can remove almost all contaminants from tap water. They remove pretty much every mineral, leaving just pure distilled water which might not be the best thing for us as we need some of those minerals!

There are more water purification methods including magnetic systems, energetic water treatments, far infra red systems and water ionizers. They all are effective to a certain degree, but some of them are still experimental and are not yet used for house water purification.

Water filter choices and which one is best for you

January 11th, 2010 No comments

When looking at water cooler filters you need to know what’s available and which one will work best for you and the environment in which it’s placed. WaterCoolerFilters.co.uk is an industry leader in water cooler filters and would be pleased to provide you with some initital information on the types of water filters available on the market right now.

Firstly there’s the activated carbon water filters that fit onto the faucet. This type of filter is good because it’s simple and quite inexpenisve. However although it will reduce the chlorine in the water and will improve the taste it won’t remove all of the other contaminants that might be present.

Next there’s the counter top or under sink filters which use active carbon technology together with other forms of filtration, the most common of which is a membrane with tiny holes in it which allows only the smaller substances to go through the filter.  These types of filters reduce most harmful substances that may be found in tap water but can be more expensive than other types of filters because of this.

Then last but not least, there’s the reverse osmosis systems, which seem to remove almost all the contaminants of the water, including the ones our bodies may actually need. The other downside of these filters is that they can be very expensive and usually waste a lot of water while in operation.

Maintaining your water coolers

October 28th, 2009 No comments

plumbed-in-water-cooler-largeIf you have recently had plumbed in water coolers installed in your school, office or home you will need to ensure you keep them clean by having them sanistised and changing the water filter at least every six months.

Depending on which water cooler company you are renting or have purchased through, the way in which this process occurs will differ. Some companies will leave you with a sanitisation kit for you or your maintenance team to do themselves, whereas other companies will provide a full service contract which usually includes six monthly service and cleaning , six monthly filter changes as well as an engineer on call incase of any leaks or damage that needs fixing. It’s especially important to have the engineer on call so you can have things fixed straight away if any problems do arise.

When choosing a water cooler company it’s important to ask what their service contract involves and whether you need a higher of lower level. You don’t want to be paying for the service you aren’t getting.

So make sure they are a reliable company who will send an engineer out when needed. The last thing you need is to have a leaking water cooler for days on end.

WaterCoolerFilters.co.uk is a joint venture between The Water Cooler Company and The Water Delivery Company covering the UK and can provide water filter servicing as well as wider drinking water services.

Water Regulations Advisory Scheme (WRAS)

June 22nd, 2009 No comments

www.watercoolerfilters.co.uk and WRAS Regulations:

wras-logo-large-opt[1]

For the bottleless water cooler industry WRAS certification is an optional level of certification that products supplied to customers can adhere to. It shows that the supplier is looking to a certain level of quality in both supplier products and also in the internal installation techniques it follows. This is a very important consideration for bottleless water cooler customers as the quality of plumbing and water  coolers is key to having a secured water provision solution in place.

The WRAS authority aims to:

a) To promote knowledge of the Water Regulations throughout the UK and to encourage their consistent interpretation and enforcement, for the prevention of waste, undue consumption, misuse, erroneous measurement or contamination of water.

b) To provide an advisory service for and on behalf of Water Suppliers and for any other person or body seeking guidance on the principles of Water Regulations.

c) To consult on behalf of the water supply industry in the UK with Government, with professional, trade and other organisations, with fittings and materials manufacturers and others regarding the Water Regulations and related matters.

d) To develop criteria for testing materials and fittings to assess their compliance with the Regulators’ Specifications for approved products in accordance with the Water Regulations.

(e) To assess the results of the testing of materials and fittings to determine their compliance with the Regulators’ Specifications and to publish up-to-date lists of satisfactory materials and fittings in the Scheme’s Water Fittings and Materials Directory.

(f) To administer for those Water Suppliers who wish it, a scheme to assess, register and publicise Approved Contractors in accordance with the Water Regulations.

(g) To participate in the representation of the UK Water Supply Industry in the development of relevant, practical and appropriate national and international standards for water fittings and plumbing systems.

Use of Brita filters for plumbed water coolers

June 22nd, 2009 No comments

Our sister company, The Water Cooler Company has noticed a marked growth in the number of customers asking specifically that our water coolers come with Brita filtration. Our hope is that the information found below will allow our customers to understand our position and then decide whether to take the Brita option over our other water filter options – LINK THIS TO DROP DOWN BAR.

Brita Replacement FilterBrita’s Water Filtration Experience
Brita technology has been applied to several areas of the UK drinking water marketplace. In 2008 the Aquavend Cool filter was launched to be used in conjunction with other plumbed water coolers. Brita were the first consumer orientated brand to begin looking at water cooler filtration and they have had some success. After looking at the product we have also decided to offer customers this option.  The filter specifications are shown below and it is up to customers to decide whether they want this filter rather than the Pentek fitted to their plumbed water cooler.
What is the Brita Water Cooler Product?
On the Brita website the product is described as “With its special activated carbon filter media, the AquaVend Cool filter cartridge mounted at the inlet side of the machine guarantees safe elimination of all unpleasant odours and tastes and reliably retains particles > 0,5 μm. It offers perfect protection of the machine and ensures perfect water quality.”

Technical data for Brita AquaVend Cool

Brita Filter and Housing

What does this mean to our customers?
For customers the most important factors of the product description seem to be that the filter is a solid carbon block (cheaper carbon inline filters are NOT blocks), that it works to 8 bar of pressure and that it filters water down to the 0.5 micron level. The Brita water cooler filter also has a six month lifespan which is the standard water cooler filter term in our industry.
The standard plumbed water cooler filter that www.watercoolerfilters.co.uk supply to customers is a Pentek water cooler filter which is one of the higher spec’ed filters on the market. Our Pentek filter is also a solid carbon block, filters to the 1 micron level, and  is tested up to 8 bar of pressure.
Customers can choose whichever filter they wish when they either rent or purchase a plumbed water cooler from us, give us a call on 0845 500 4455.
